Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman, who also serves as the team’s punt returner, suffered a broken right foot in Sunday’s victory over the Miami Dolphins, a league source confirmed. The Patriots announced Tuesday that they have put the fourth-year pro on injured reserve, thus ending his season.
Edelman, who left the stadium on crutches with a walking boot on the injured foot, is in the final year of his contract.
To replace Edelman, the Pats announced the signing of veteran Donte Stallworth. Stallworth was with the Patriots in the preseason but was cut. A veteran of nine seasons, Stallworth, 32, caught 46 passes for the Pats in 2007, averaging 15.2 yards per reception while scoring three touchdowns.
The oft-injured Edelman, who suffered a hand injury in Week 2 against the Ravens that caused him to miss several games, has come on of late, providing help in the offense.
