BOSTON – Clay Buchholz remained in Massachusetts General Hospital on Tuesday with esophagitis, an inflammation of the lining of the esophagus. The Red Sox released a statement before Tuesday night’s game against Toronto stating that Buchholz is “doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.”
When that full recovery arrives, ending his stay on the 15-day disabled list, is still a matter of speculation. Buchholz missed his last scheduled start, Saturday against Atlanta, made by Franklin Morales.
With Josh Beckett coming off the disabled list in time to make a start in the four-game series at Seattle, which begins Thursday night, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said that using a six-man rotation up to the All-Star break is a possibility. That would carry the Red Sox through their series with the Yankees at Fenway on July 6-8.
“Depending on how we slot Josh in, it could benefit to everyone to get a little creative there until the All-Star break,’’ Valentine said.
Presumably, Morales and Aaron Cook would continue in such a rotation with Beckett, Jon Lester, Felix Doubront and Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tuesday night’s starter against the Blue Jays.
Esophagitis, according to information on WebMD.com, is caused by an infection or irritation in the esophagus.
