HUDSON – Before making any decisions of their own, Hudson Planning Board members want to know how surrounding communities address school impact fees for 55-plus housing. The issue came before the board Wednesday night after the owners of Sparkling River LLC asked that such fees be waived for their 55 and older development on Route 3A, off Derry Road. Town Planner John Cashell explained that many residents aren’t knowledgeable about the fees, pointing out that it’s not a tax and can be issued by municipalities throughout New Hampshire. Such fees can also be charged for sewer and water systems, libraries and the like. The school impact fees deal with the number of children in a town and are a one-time shot, which are collected at the time of occupancy.
