Nicole Tong began her college career at the University of New Hampshire but transferred to a school in Portland, Ore., after two years. What began as an adventure to a new home quickly became a struggle to manage student loans and other costs.
“I’m having a really hard time making ends meet to pay off school,” said Tong, 21, of Manchester. “Financial aid will not cover even a quarter of my college expenses.”
Tong has had to work full-time in order to cover her cost of living and is only able to take one or two classes at a community college until she can earn residency in her new home.
“Here I am at 21 with $20,000 in debt to Sallie Mae,” she said. “It’s hard, but I am determined to get my bachelor’s degree, so I’m making it work.”
Tong is not alone in her struggles.
