LYNDEBOROUGH – The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating after a fire in a vacant home Saturday afternoon caused up to $50,000 in smoke and heat damage. Lyndeborough Fire Chief Rick McQuade said the fire began just before 12:30 p.m. at 27 Locust Lane. The fire was contained to the basement when first responders arrived. The fire did not spread to other areas of the home, which had been vacant for close to two years, but did cause smoke and heat damage throughout the building. It took 15-30 minutes to knock down the fire, McQuade said, but firefighters remained on scene until about 4 p.m., cleaning up and assisting with the investigation of the fire’s cause, which has yet to be determined. McQuade said the Fire Marshal’s Office is often called in to help with fire investigations, especially those that occur in vacant homes. “Anytime you have a vacant structure, it does raise your awareness to what could have caused it,” he said. Still, McQuade said there is power to the home and that the fire marshal’s involvement does not mean the fire is suspicious. “We’re just investigating it like we would any other fire,” he said. One firefighter suffered a minor shoulder injury but was checked out on scene and cleared. Fire crews from Wilton, Amherst, Milford, Greenfield, Greenville, Temple and other communities responded to the blaze. Danielle Curtis can be reaches at 594-6557 or dcurtis@nashua telegraph.com
