NASHUA – George Katis puts his money and support toward the Nashua Goes Back to School Event because, as he puts it, it’s an event that matters. “The economy has been struggling as everybody knows and there’s more need than ever to help our students,” Katis said. The event is organized by the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce, which Katis has been a part of since it began, with the help of the city and local organizations. “I’ve been very involved with the chamber pretty much from the beginning,” said Katis, who has been a part of the program for nearly a decade. Each year Katis donates $1,000 to the event through his business, Nashua Wallpaper and Paint. The Ted Williams Foundation, which Katis is also involved with, donates $1,000 as well. Each year, the Nashua Goes Back to School Event gives away free backpacks stocked with school supplies to children in the Nashua school district. “It’s great too because we make sure they have a library card so they can get acquainted with the library,” Katis said. “Without a doubt we want to get them interested in reading and comfortable with using the library.” Katis said of the largest advantages of the charity for families is how it saves those who are struggling financially the cost of supplies. “This is such a great event to kick off the school year for them, not only to give them supplies, but also just to show our kids that the city of Nashua is there to support them every way we can,” he said. The Nashua Goes Back to School Event will take place from 5-7 p.m.
