AMHERST – With their current contract set to expire June 30 and no agreement in place for a new contract, members of the Amherst Education Association will likely be working without a contract beginning July 1, the start of the next fiscal year.
The AEA represents teachers and staff at Clark and Wilkins elementary schools and Amherst Middle School.
In a statement Tuesday, AEA President Larry Ballard said that because the union and Amherst School Board were unable to agree on a new contract before Tuesday’s deadline, it makes it probable members will have no contract in place by July 1.
Ballard said a new proposed agreement had to be reached by Tuesday in order for it to become part of the Amherst School District’s fiscal 2013-14 proposed budget.
As a result, Ballard said, members “will be working without the stabilizing influence of a contract for the third time in nine years.”
Neither SAU 39 Superintendent Peter Warburton, business manager Betty Shankel nor Amherst School Board Chairwoman Peg Bennett could immediately be reached for comment.
The public hearing for the Amherst School District’s fiscal 2014 budget is slated for 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Souhegan High School theater. The Deliberative Session is scheduled for 9 a.m.
