The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Greater Nashua kicked off its 2013 season at the Weathervane Seafood Restaurant on Thursday with a guest speech from Mayor Donnalee Lozeau.
Cancer survivors, caregivers, families, schools, companies, and faith-based and civic organizations gathered for the rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year.
The relay is scheduled for June 14-15 at Nashua High School North. It allows communities to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, to remember those who have died from it and to fight back against the disease.
Teams take turns walking or running around the track of a local school; every team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.
“Because cancer never sleeps, relays are overnight events,” a press release from Relay For Life of Greater Nashua states.
Most teams fundraise prior to the event, but some also hold creative fundraisers during the relay.
