NASHUA – Every member of the Souhegan High School boys hockey team knew the importance of Saturday’s game against Belmont-Gilford.
That included freshman Joe Nutting.
Nutting did everything he could to get the Sabers a win, recording a hat trick including the game-winning goal with 2:14 left in overtime that gave Souhegan a 5-4 win over the Red Rainders.
Ryan Peterson stopped 40 shots for the Sabers (9-3 in Division III) and Matt Wilson and Vincent Silvestri also scored, as Souhegan gave up a two-goal lead in the second period and had to rally in the third to force overtime.
The win was just what the Sabers needed, too, having lost to Kennett 4-1 on Wednesday.
“That was part of the whole shtick at practice Thursday and Friday after the game against Kennett,” Souhegan coach Dan Belliveau said. “We wanted to make sure we bounced back. It’s all about momentum at this time of year. They were focused on that.”
Focused enough to take the lead less than three minutes into the game, when Silvestri tipped a centering pass from Wilson past B-G goalie Calvin Davis.
