PORTSMOUTH (AP) - A New Hampshire transportation spokesman says a lift bridge that's been out of commission for days has been successfully raised to temporarily allow ships to travel up the Piscataqua River. The 73-year-old Sarah Mildred Long Bridge was shut down on Wednesday after its center span got stuck during a routine test. With the bridge closed, shipping lanes have been blocked as well as vehicles traveling from Portsmouth, N.H., to Kittery, Maine. Bill Boynton of the New Hampshire Department of Transportation said the bridge was raised Saturday evening and ships will be able to pass through until 2 p.m. Sunday, when the bridge will be lowered for testing. Officials hope to have the bridge reopened to vehicle traffic on Monday. The ships carry heating oil and other supplies on the river.
