CONCORD (AP) - New Hampshire Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte are calling on the Department of Commerce to reconsider its decision to require drastic quota reductions designed to end overfishing of Gulf of Maine cod and haddock this year.
In a joint letter, the senators asked for a reconsideration of the National Marine Fisheries Service decision, which threatens the survival of New Hampshire's fishing industry and the economic well-being of its coastal communities.
Officials are set to meet this week to decide catch limits for fishermen who chase bottom-dwelling groundfish, such as cod and haddock. A key New England Fishery Management Council committee has already recommended massive cuts that fishermen have repeatedly warned will destroy the industry.
