AMHERST – State and local fire officials may know by Tuesday what caused the three-alarm fire that heavily damaged a Hickory Drive home Saturday morning.
Chief Mark Boynton and Deputy Chief Matt Conley were unavailable Monday because of the holiday, but a firefighter on duty said that while he wasn’t authorized to comment directly on the investigation, officials had been working since Saturday to pinpoint a cause, and a result should be coming soon.
The home, a long, five-bedroom split level, was boarded up and nobody was around Monday afternoon. Signs stating the building is unsafe, and nobody is allowed in were posted on the doors. A few articles of clothing were scattered near the east side entrance.
On Saturday, crews from Merrimack, Bedford, Milford, Hollis and Mont Vernon responded to assist Amherst firefighters after the blaze was reported around 8:15 a.m., Boynton said.
The heaviest damage appeared to be in the end of the home containing the fireplace.
