DOVER – Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan gave a spirited defense of American free enterprise Tuesday, maintaining that President Obama’s view on the role of the federal government has made millions more financially dependent. Without making direct reference to it, Ryan was clearly responding to the furor over secretly taped video footage of Mitt Romney in which he said in May that he’s given up on getting votes from the “47 percent” who rely on government help and act as victims. “The American system of limited government and free enterprise has done more to help the poor, has done more to help lift people out of dependency than any other economic system ever designed,” Ryan told a pro-GOP crowd of 500 at the McConnell Community Center. The Wisconsin congressman said Romney’s plan to cut nonessential  federal spending and create a simpler, flatter income tax code will unleash an explosion of job growth that will benefit the middle class. “What Mitt Romney and I owe you is an alternative to vote for.
