NASHUA– Mike McQuilkin has coached basketball for years, but until last weekend, he had never taken a team to a state championship game.
But that’s not the only reason his team’s Saturday win was especially sweet. It also had a lot to do with the players on his team.
“The kids were really excited, it was so exciting for them to finish in a perfect way, undefeated,” McQuilkin said. “I told them, that this is a unique opportunity that none of us had before.”
McQuilkin, a Nashua South psychology teacher, coached the high school’s Unified basketball – which unites special and general education students on one team – through its first season in the city. On Saturday, the team defeated Spaulding High School of Rochester, marking the end of their undefeated season in a big way.
The Unified sports program is a part of a partnership between Special Olympics and the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association.
