Kathryn Havey says she remembers well the day she realized she had to put down her beloved golden retriever Charlie. He died just a month ago.“My husband was looking at me and I was looking at (Charlie) and I said, ‘I’m going to stay up with him all night,’ ” she said.
Havey, of Brookline, said when her dog – her first – collapsed in her backyard, at just 7 years old, she knew his longstanding illness had caught up to him. She took him to a veterinarian in Wilton who said he was too sick to survive and would have to be euthanized immediately. But Havey, who got Charlie right after her mother passed away, said she couldn’t stomach the thought of taking him in his last moments to a doctor’s office.
“He didn’t like to go in the car,” she said.![]()
