The big issue of voter ID proved not to be an issue on Election Day

The new voter ID law seemed to have limited effect at the polls this Election Day, largely because most voters just showed their ID and moved on. In Windham, for example, town clerk Nicole Merrill had a police officer sitting next to the table where ID-less voters had to fill out a special affidavit, in case there were any complaints or issues. There were none. In fact, she said, there were hardly any affidavits: just 46 out of 8,337 voters, or barely one-half of 1 percent. “Surprisingly, it was very slow,” said Merrill. It wasn’t slow at the actual polls, however. Windham had turnout around 80 percent, putting it in the same ballpark as most area communities Tuesday. The unofficial figure was 82.5 percent in Nashua, 88 percent in Brookline, 78 percent in Hudson and 87 percent in Merrimack.
