For Ben Lambert, it was love at first snow.
The Milford High School senior was on skis not long after he learned how to walk, and by the time he was in middle school, coaches were using him as an example to teach the high school team.
Skiing has always been a passion for Lambert, but it also may have helped save his life.
During the high school season of his sophomore year, Lambert felt off. While he was having another successful year, he fatigued easily, his joints hurt and he started losing weight.
When a fall caused a worrisome hip injury, Lambert and his parents, Jean-Marie and George, knew something was wrong. After a trip to the doctor, and a series of tests, they got the worst possible news – Lambert had Acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells.
But there was good news, too. The disease had been detected very early on, and the diagnosis came right near the end of Lambert’s sophomore high school season, meaning that if treatment went as well as possible, he could be back skiing by the start of his junior season.
“He was fortunate, and coined what they call an early responder,” Jean-Marie said.
