CONCORD – Experts in medicine and opiate addiction will gather next week to talk about progress being made to address prescription drug abuse and to unveil a new tool for New Hampshire doctors who prescribe potentially dangerous drugs.
Overdose deaths from prescription painkillers and demand for treatment of opioid addiction have more than quadrupled in the last 10 years, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.
Members of the Governor’s Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the state Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Services and a leading researcher will speak at a press conference held by the New Hampshire Medical Society at the Legislative Office Building in Concord at 10 a.m. Wednesday .
Dr. Seddon Savage, a researcher at the Dartmouth Center on Addiction, Recovery & Education, will unveil a Web-based resource and guidebook for New Hampshire doctors and other prescribers of opioids, such as oxycodoone and Percocet.
The site lists a number of best-practice guidelines regarding opioid use and pain management and includes links to local resources for physicians and their patients so they can better adhere to those standards, Savage said.
