CONCORD – State election officials begin Tuesday a week-long effort to recount the ballots in two dozen races across the state including three in the Nashua area.
The recount begins Tuesday at the State Archives Building for the state Senate District 9 race where Andy Sanborn, R-Bedford, won by 253 votes over Lee Nyquist, D-New Boston.
At the Legislative Office Building, workers for Secretary of State Bill Gardner will review the ballots in the Hillsborough County House district that consists of Brookline and Mason.
Republican Valerie Ogden, of Brookline, is contesting that result after finishing only 10 votes behind Melanie Levesque, D-Brookline, for the second of two seats in this district.
Rep. Jack Flanagan, R-Brookline, topped the ticket in this race.
House Speaker William O’Brien, R-Mont Vernon, will defend his 71-vote victory for a House seat during a recount Wednesday.
This was his margin over Kar y Jencks, D-New Boston, for the second of two seats representing those two towns.
Democrats took over the majority in the 400-person House of Representatives in last week’s elections which means O’Brien’s tenure as House leader will end next month.
The recounts consist of 20 House races, two in the state Senate and one for Cheshire County sheriff.
