From shoeshines to fine jewelry: A downtown Nashua centennial celebration

Perhaps he planned it, or maybe things just happened to work out for the young, ambitious Greek immigrant with his heart set on opening a downtown Nashua business that would revolve around sales and customer service, but mostly around family. With an expanding brood that would eventually reach eight – three girls, five boys – George J. Scontsas had a ready-made workforce for the new venture that would at once showcase his cobbler skills and help fill a growing need among the city’s businessmen and society women. “It was primarily shoe repair, shining and hat-blocking,” Philip Scontsas, the entrepreneur’s grandson and third-generation owner of the iconic shop, said this week. “Later, he set up a little kiosk space and had a barber come in.” As much as things have changed at the corner of Main and High streets, to paraphrase the timeworn adage, a vital component has remained the same: Scontsas Fine Jewelry & Home Decor is as much about family as it was when the awning banner read “George Scontsas & Sons” a century ago. To celebrate the shop’s – and family’s – enduring legacy, Philip and Amalia Scontsas are hosting a “One Family, Three Generations, 100 Years” celebration Thursday night at the store.
