MANCHESTER (AP) - Drivers passing through New Hampshire's largest city could find themselves stopped by police at a surprise sobriety checkpoint. Manchester police have received court authorization to conduct sobriety checkpoints on Thursday and Friday. Police Chief David Mara says intoxicated drivers have been involved in an alarming number of accidents resulting in injuries and deaths. Law enforcement agencies that conduct checkpoints have a portion of the cost offset by federal highway safety funds. Police are not revealing the times or locations of the checkpoints. New Hampshire state law permits sobriety checkpoints if police can satisfy a judge the checkpoint is necessary and search methods are constitutionally reasonable.
