CONCORD – Republican Dennis Lemare of Lee said he’s running against congressman Charles Bass because of the incumbent’s record on federal taxes and spending.
But Lemare doesn’t live in the 2nd Congressional District that Bass represents in Washington.
Lemare resides many miles away on the eastern end of the 1st Congressional District.
Federal law only requires candidates to live in the state they seek to represent.
Lemare said he grew up in Newport and also has extended family living in the 2nd District.
“If people have an issue with that then their priorities are mixed up because my objective is to truly represent the people of New Hampshire in Washington,” Lemare said. “It is the state law; I am playing by the rules.”
In 2010, Lemare sought major office for the first time running for the U.S. Senate.
He finished fifth, getting 1 percent of GOP primary vote.
Lemare charged Bass, who has been in Congress for nearly 14 years, talks a good game about cutting the federal deficit and debt but frequently votes for higher federal spending.
“He has voted five times to raise the debt ceiling,” Lemare maintained. “He has always voted the opposite way.
