Danny Ainge might as well walk into Thursday night’s draft wearing a big sandwich board advertising his greatest need: size.
Fortunately for the Celtics general manager, this year’s board is full of power forwards and centers capable of making quick contributions.
Though the Celtics’ greatest need is at center – a relatively deep class headed by the impending No. 1 pick, Anthony Davis – the line between legitimate 5’s and 4’s is, per usual, blurred.
The Celtics could find help in both areas, including today’s focus in the power forward group. The question is whether any of these players, beyond Kansas’ Thomas Robinson, have more to offer than JaJuan Johnson, last year’s first-round pick.
If they trade up
If Davis and UConn’s Andre Drummond are categorized as centers, then the best here is Robinson, the forward who may be one of the most rugged players in the draft. He’s also a top-5 player well out of the Celtics’ reach.
But with a slight move up the ladder, the Celtics could easily be in play for three big forwards with remarkably different skills.
Mississippi State forward Arnett Moultrie, who reportedly injured an ankle during a recent workout, may be the most offensively prepared player for the next step.
