FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – It was there for the taking, and late on Sunday, the New England Patriots reached out and grabbed it.
Following Houston’s loss to Indianapolis earlier in the day, all the Patriots had to do to gain a first-round bye was defeat the mediocre Miami Dolphins. In the chill of Gillette Stadium, they did just that, 28-0, to secure the second seed in the AFC and avoid having to play on Wild Card Weekend.
“Kind of a late Christmas present,” Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said after completing 22 of 36 passes for 284 yards and two TDs. “We accept.”
The win gives the Patriots a 12-4 regular season record, but as a result of their beatdown of Houston at Gillette three weeks ago, New England wins a tiebreaker.
