NASHUA – The Bishop Guertin High School girls basketball team had been considered the best team in the state by most opposing coaches throughout the entirety of the Nashua North Girls Holiday Classic. But after a 54-37 loss to Bedford in the championship game on Sunday, Cardinals coach Scott Hazelton is starting to think otherwise. “I just think Bedford is a great team, they proved it (Sunday),” he said. “In my opinion they’re the best team in the state. When you play a team like that you can’t make mistakes, and I just think they’re a lot better than us.” The Bulldogs had dominated play for a majority of the first three quarters, but found themselves leading by just five heading into the fourth quarter after Nicole Hayner (12 points) hit four 3-pointers in the quarter to spark a BG rally. But whatever ground the Cardinals may have gained in the third quarter, Bedford got it right back with a 13-0 run to open the final eight minutes of play to propel the Bulldogs to the win. “We played our best game of the whole tournament, probably our best game of the whole year (Sunday),” Bedford coach Sue Thomas said. “Everybody came to play and that’s all I really wanted from them.” The Bulldogs obtained the fourth quarter momentum right from the start, getting a long jumper from Haley Driscoll (nine points) to open the quarter before 3-pointers by Caroline Conrad (five points) and Brianna Purcell (nine points) pushed the lead to 48-33 with 4:45 remaining in the game.
