A few Facebook comments can go a long way.
The Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter received a $5,000 check from Sunnyside Acura on Monday as a result of its “ ’Tis the Season” campaign on Facebook, according to the shelter’s own Facebook page.
Throughout the holiday season, the Nashua-based Acura dealership sought comments from Facebook users in finishing the sentence, “ ’Tis the season to …”
According to its page, Sunnyside Acura agreed to donate $1 for every comment posted on its website, up to $5,000, for the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter.
Greater Nashua Facebook users responded in droves.
“ ’Tis the season to share,” one participant wrote.
“ ’Tis the season to catch snowflakes on your tongue,” another wrote.
The assistance couldn’t come at a more crucial time, said Lisa Christie, executive director of the Nashua Soup Kitchen.
“Winter is always a tough time for the folks we serve,” Christie said.
Families can’t always afford to heat their homes and buy groceries, Christie said, so they rely more on the shelter’s services. Colds and flus also affect part-time workers financially, because they don’t have benefits or they miss work at several jobs either because of their own illness or to stay home with ill children, she added.
Plus, the shelter’s own heating bills are higher in the winter.
“All of this means the NSKS is called upon to do even more than at some other times of the year,” Christie said. “We will use these funds to help us do all that we do for the individuals and families living in poverty in our community.”
