NASHUA – A week after the city’s mayor, school superintendent and police chief met with other city officials to discuss security concerns in the Nashua School District, the Board of Aldermen will host a public hearing about bonding $2.4 million to upgrade security equipment at the city’s schools. The borrowed money would pay for installing intercoms, cameras, electronic locks, viewing monitors for main offices and remote door-lock releases at all city schools. The funding proposal was sponsored by Alderman-at-Large David Deane, and already there’s a question about the best way for the city to pay for it. “I had to start somewhere,” Deane said of the $2.4 million to be bonded. The figure factors in inflation and changes in technology since the security recommendations were issued three years ago. “I gave them somewhat of a buffer to work with.” Not all aldermen are convinced that bonding is the best way to go, however. “I don’t think there’s anybody who thinks putting locks on the schools is not the appropriate thing to do,” board President Brian McCarthy said Friday.
