South catches wave vs. BG

NASHUA – When a rivalry game is postponed twice in two days, you never know where the wave of emotion is going to fall when the teams finally meet. It fell just right Sunday for the Nashua South boys basketball team, who were a step quicker than Bishop Guertin right from the start on their way to a 66-51 victory at Nashua North. When it was over, South coach Nate Mazerolle joked that he’d have to give his team two days off before every game. But junior guard Tim Preston said that although the Panthers couldn’t practice formally during the storm, they did get together at the Nashua YMCA to stay sharp. “We played with the kind of intensity we’ve lacked in the last two games,’’ said Mazerolle, whose 9-3 Panthers snapped a two-game losing streak. “Maybe we needed those last two games to act as a reality check, to tell them they just can’t walk on the floor and expect to win.’’ South seemed to come out with a little extra bounce, leading 14-4 midway through the first quarter. They built the lead to 30-12 early in the second quarter and the Cardinals never made a serious run. “We wanted to pressure their guard and control (Jeff) Lunn,’’ Tim Preston said. “Tonight we played the way we’re capable of playing.’’ Lunn would finish with 21 points for Bishop Guertin, but the best he could do was match the production of South center Jack Preston, who finished with a game-high 22. When things are going well for the Panthers, they get everyone going, and that was the case Sunday.
