NASHUA – Police Chief John Seusing was stunned to hear the mayor’s remarks about the city police unions in her State of the City address Tuesday, and said that, if anything, they could be an “interference” to the ongoing contract negotiations process.
“I was surprised that she said what she did in that forum, and certainly to the extent that she did,” Seusing said. “I really didn’t think it served any legitimate purpose, other than maybe trying to put pressure on the unions to settle.”
Mayor Donnalee Lozeau presented her State of the City address to the Board of Aldermen on Tuesday night, sharing the city’s accomplishments and challenges in the year past.
Going forward, she said, financial constraints will continue to impact the city, especially in light of rising retirement and health care costs.
She called out the city’s five police unions for not agreeing to increased employee contributions to health care premiums – a concession the other city unions agreed to under their current contracts.
“Because those employees are working under the previously negotiated contracts they have received the same benefits at a lower cost than their colleagues since October 2011,” Lozeau said in the address. “By the end of this month that will mean there is a $438,415 shortfall in contributions by police employees ...
