NASHUA – Businesses parking U-Hauls and other rental vehicles on clogged city streets and public parking spaces have irked one neighborhood enough for its alderman to propose an ordinance to prohibit it.
On Tuesday, the Board of Aldermen will get its reading of legislation, sponsored by Ward 3 Alderman Diane Sheehan, that will deem it “unlawful” for any vehicle sales, lease or rental business to park merchandise on a public street or in a city-owned public parking lot while for sale, lease or rent.
Sheehan said Monday that the primary problem is with oversized U-Hauls parked on French Hill streets.
“It looks like a neighborhood of transience everyday, as well as the visibility issues it creates,” Sheehan said, “but essentially, storing inventory shouldn’t be done on public property. A business should be contained within its business.”
Ward 3 contains several vehicle repair businesses, which also are permitted to rent vehicles, Sheehan said. One business owner, whom Sheehan declined to name, has capitalized on that ability by renting out large U-Hauls and storing them on city streets while performing repairs during business hours.
“It has been that way a couple years now,” Sheehan said. “I don’t know if I want to throw stones at him.
