Milford’s Dwight Barbiasz had some spectacular flights and landings this weekend in Iowa, finishing third for the University of Florida in the high jump at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. The biggest was a personal best leap of 7 feet, 53⁄4 inches, which also qualified him for the Olympic Trials later this month in Eugene, Ore. But one landing was a little rough. On the return flight with his team from Des Moines, Iowa, the plane’s windshield cracked at 37,000 feet and it was forced to land quickly in Tuscaloosa, Ala., where it was scheduled to drop off University of Alabama athletes who shared the charter. “The landing was a little crazy,” Barbiasz said. “We came in fast and it was a hard landing. We didn’t know until we landed about the windshield.” It took a few hours to line up another plane for the return flight to Gainesville, Fla., where the Gators continued to celebrate the first outdoor championship in school history.
