NASHUA – Dawn Pyles was just about to put her two small children down for a nap Saturday afternoon when she glanced and saw only black outside the window.
She thought for a second a big truck was in the alley outside her Buck Street apartment and the exhaust was building up.
“It just got black outside and I knew something wasn’t right,” Pyles said.
She looked a little closer and saw bits of burning paper floating by the second-floor window. She looked a little farther and saw flames coming from the side of the building.
She panicked.
There were no naps for Addison, 4, and Alijah, 2, that day. Pyles scooped them up and fled downstairs, one child tucked under each arm and into the street, while someone from the neighborhood was running through the apartment building pounding on doors to rouse the other residents.
“We only left with the clothes on our back,” Pyles said.![]()
