PETERBOROUGH – A Philadelphia-based private equity firm has acquired Eastern Mountain Sports.
Versa Capital Management LLC announced the acquisition of the retailer in a news release Monday. Eastern Mountain Sports is headquartered in Peterborough and sells outdoor gear and clothing.
Versa is a private equity investment firm with $1.2 billion in assets. Its portfolio includes Bob’s Stores, a Northeastern apparel retailer; Polartec, an outdoor apparel designer and manufacturer; Avenue Stores, a women’s clothing store; and Black Angus Steakhouses.
Mark Walsh, a Versa principal and chairman of Bob’s Stores, will serve as chairman of the board of EMS, according to the news release. An EMS official referred questions to the news release, which did not provide additional details about the purchase, including the company’s future in Peterborough.
Will Manzer, EMS CEO, said the company will strengthen through its acquisition by Versa.
“With Versa on board, all EMS associates can remain focused on delivering the very best level of support to our stores and to our customers during this holiday shopping season,” Manzer said in the news release.
Eastern Mountain Sports started in 1967 in Massachusetts and since then has grown to 69 stores in 12 Eastern states.
